Tracking progress
In developing its annual progress reports, the authority examines climate and related policies being delivered around Australia and tracks their implementation. We collate this work in the Climate Policy Tracker.
Successful policy implementation is crucial for cutting emissions, setting Australia up to be a thriving net zero economy, and preparing for climate impacts that are already locked in.
The Climate Policy Tracker complements the regular reporting that governments are already doing on Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions and climate change policies, including:
- Annual Climate Change Statements under the Climate Change Act 2022
- quarterly updates of Australia’s National Greenhouse Gas Inventory
- annual National Inventory Reports to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
- annual emissions projections reports
- National Communications on Climate Change and Biennial Transparency Reports to the UNFCCC
- state and territory progress reporting.
The Tracker compiles information drawn from official and public sources. It provides a point-in-time summary of available information, but may not be fully exhaustive as policies change and are updated. The authority makes annual updates to the Climate Policy Tracker. The 2024 edition of the tracker builds on the 2023 edition by including state and territory initiatives and a broader range of other climate-related initiatives.
