Using our channels

Responding to comments and questions

We aren’t always able to respond to individual comments or questions. We’ll aim to answer questions where these arise frequently or raise important new issues.

Where relevant our team will direct you to public information and formal channels for feedback.

Terms of use

When you view, post or comment on, or use in any way our social media, you must comply with these Terms of Use. This is a binding legal agreement. Please read the Terms of Use carefully.

You agree to:

  • comply with the terms of use of the platform (such as Facebook, Instagram, X and YouTube)
  • treat other people using the platform with respect and courtesy
  • provide consent for us to reproduce and publish your posts, comments or materials (either in whole or an edited version) on our website and in any associated Commonwealth publications

You also agree not to post any material that:

  • is offensive, obscene, vulgar or violent
  • vilifies or discriminates against any particular gender, religion, sexual orientation, age, disability, marital or domestic status, race or ethnicity, criminal record or political opinion
  • is fraudulent, deceptive or misleading, including impersonating or falsely representing any other person or organisation
  • makes unproven or unsupported accusations against individuals or organisations
  • you do not have a legal right to post (e.g. material that infringes the copyright or other intellectual property rights of another person or material which is confidential)
  • advertises, offers or promotes anything of a commercial nature (e.g. that may breach the Spam Act 2003)
  • would constitute a criminal offence or give rise to civil liability (for example defamatory material) or is otherwise illegal or unlawful
  • contains overtly party-political comments.

You must also not:

  • use our channels to defame, libel, insult, abuse, humiliate, harass, stalk, threaten, intimidate, attack or cause distress or inconvenience to anyone
  • post any personal information (e.g. names, e-mail or private addresses, phone numbers, photographs) relating to other people without their consent
  • introduce any virus or other form of malicious code into the social media channels
  • deliberately disrupt discussions (e.g. trolling)
  • post irrelevant or excessively long material.

If you breach these Terms of Use we may:

  • hide, remove or refuse to post any material you have submitted
  • mute, suspend or permanently block you from using our social media channels
  • report your conduct to the owner of the relevant social media platform and to any appropriate law enforcement authorities
  • take any other action, including legal action, which we consider to be appropriate.

These actions are at our discretion.

Moderation policy

We will make reasonable efforts to ensure that we identify, moderate and remove any inappropriate material. We use a post-publication moderation process, which means most comments are published immediately and then reviewed after publication to ensure compliance with these Terms of Use. Comments that breach these Terms of Use will be removed. We also use, where available, in-built platform filters to automatically block posts containing offensive or obscene keywords from publication.

There may be times when posts or comments that breach these Terms of Use appear on our social media channels before we can remove them. Please contact our communications team if you are aware of such a post or comment, and we will address the issue appropriately. Please contact us if you believe we’ve made a mistake with our content moderation, and we’ll deal with it as quickly as we can.

Indemnity

In using our social media channels, you agree to indemnify the Commonwealth and its employees and agents against any and all claims, costs, losses or damage for which the Commonwealth (or its employees and agents) becomes liable to a third party arising out of, or in connection with, your use or misuse of our social media channels or any breach of these Terms of Use by you.
